Listen today to WVON’s “Retro Day” in celebration of the station’s 50th anniversary. It’s great so far and there’s still the whole day to go!

Here’s how to tune in:

  • RADIO: In the Chicago area, WVON is at 1690 AM.
  • LIVE STREAM: Listen online on WVON.com.
  • MOBILE: Use the iHeartRadio app on your mobile phone or tablet.

If you listen in and hear something that sounds current, it’s because they’re still broadcasting today’s news and weather. Stay tuned past that break and you’ll hear the 1960’s era music and DJs.

From Chicagoland Radio and Media:

WVON-AM’s “Retro Day” will air recordings of the actual programming from the 1960s, featuring some the most legendary Chicago DJs ever, all in the prime of their careers. The station will air classic shows from such influential superstar DJs as Herb Kent, Bill “Butterball” Crane, Lucky Cordell, E. Rodney Jones, and Pervis Spann, among others. The original classic 1960s Rhythm & Blues and Chicago Soul music and many of the original commercials will air, as well.

WVON’s “Retro Day” will take place on April 1st, starting at 6:00am and running all the way until midnight. The station will still run its regular news, traffic, and weather segments to keep listeners informed, while they enjoy the audio trip back in time.

Gigity.tv and Rosa’s Lounge present a live stream of Bring Eddie Home, a fundraiser to help pay for Eddie C. Campbell’s return trip from Germany, where he suffered a heart attack and stroke.
Here are the event details from Rosa’s site:

Description: The final line up for the Eddie C. Campbell Benefit has been confirmed by Barbara Mayson Campbell (Eddie C.’s wife)
Eddie is making some progress and plans are under way to organize his return home for rehabilitation and further medical care. Getting Eddie home and getting him the care he will need will be a very costly enterprise. Eddie has many friends who want to perform in support…but the United Center was not available!
It is still possible to support Eddie by spreading the word, buying tickets and coming to the show. The venue will not be able to accommodate comped guests.
ALL proceeds from this benefit will go to the Eddie C. Campbell Assistance Fund. Rosa’s Lounge has generously donated the venue, the organizers have volunteered their help, and the incredible musicians and the house band have all donated their time; indeed, most of them are even purchasing tickets at the door to their own gig!
On behalf of Eddie C. Campbell’s family, thank you for the outpouring of love and support.

Blues in a casino theater? First time for me. My leeriness gave way after I checked out the 360-degree view of the Northern Lights Theater on the Potawatomi site. The view from row D looked pretty good. And it was.

Not news to anyone: Kim Wilson’s harmonica playing will melt your face right off.

As many of you know, Eddie suffered a heart attack and stroke while on tour in Germany. He is out of intensive care and stabilized. However, he is at present paralyzed on his right side. We need your help. Time is of the essence; Eddie’s prognosis for a full recovery is dependent upon him receiving the appropriate medical attention including neuro/physical therapy. Eddie has no medical coverage in Germany, and, due to his condition, he may only be able to fly commercially with a medical escort or, ideally, in an air ambulance. The costs will be staggering in the coming weeks and months. Donations are being accepted at my PayPal account at the following link:

As his manager and mother of his children, I appreciate your good will, your prayers, and, if possible, your financial support.

So many of my favorite blues musicians face financial difficulties, and covering uninsured or underinsured health expenses is one of the biggest problems. Here’s a chance for us to help out Eddie Campbell and his family.

January 27th, 2013

From the Chicago Tribune on January 25, 2013:

It’s not a great situation, but it’s not the last chance. Maybe.

The letter, dated Jan. 11, is the first step in the process of obtaining a court order that would allow demolition but gives the owner 15 days to remedy the problems.

City officials confirmed the owner of the home has since reached out to try to address the issues and staffers from the Commission on Chicago Landmarks are offering help.

“The assistance is intended to help get the building secure, safe and viable as a residential property,” said Peter Strazzabosco, deputy commissioner at the Department of Housing and Economic Development.

Documents filed with the Cook County recorder of deeds indicate a bank filed a notice of foreclosure on the property in August. Chandra Cooper, identified in public records as the owner, declined to comment.

The city Buildings Department has not asked the circuit court for an order to demolish the house, and once in court it could ask a judge to drop the matter if it finds that the property is secured and the violations resolved. The house is in the North Kenwood landmark district, meaning any demolition plan would need an OK from the landmarks commission.
